THE STEPS OF A GOOD MAN ARE ORDERED BY THE LORD
Life can often feel uncertain. We face choices that seem overwhelming, paths that are confusing, and decisions whose outcomes are unclear. Many wonder: Am I going the right way? Will my effort bear fruit? How can I know I’m walking in God’s plan?
Psalm 37:23 gives us a promise of direction and delight:
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”
This is not a vague hope – it is a divine guarantee for those who walk in righteousness.
So who is the “good man”? The term “good man” in Scripture is not about perfection – it is about character. The good man is a person who seeks to live in obedience to God, a person who pursues righteousness over selfish gain, and a person whose heart is aligned with God’s Word.
Micah 6:8 reminds us that goodness involves:
“To do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
God’s ordering of steps is for those whose hearts desire to honor Him, not those who live by the world’s standard.
Notice the Psalmist uses the word “ordered.” It implies arrangement, guidance, and purpose. God does not leave the righteous to wander aimlessly. Instead, He directs the choices we make, He guides our relationships and opportunities, and He prepares the path for our growth and success.
Proverbs 16:9 echoes this truth:
“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”
Even when we make plans, it is God who aligns them with His perfect will.
Psalm 37:23 does not just say God orders our steps — it also says:
“And He delights in his way.”
God takes pleasure in guiding those who walk uprightly. This teaches us that God is not distant – He actively participates in our lives. This also teaches us that obedience brings joy and favor, and that our faithful steps glorify Him and bring Him satisfaction. When our steps align with God, life gains meaning beyond mere survival – it becomes worship in motion.
So, how do we walk in God’s order?
First, we must trust Him daily. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Faith is the first step toward ordered living. Trust is choosing God over uncertainty.
Second, we must commit our ways to God. Psalm 37:5 instructs, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” Commitment involves surrender — handing over your goals, decisions, and plans.
Third, we must seek righteous counsel. Proverbs 11:14 teaches, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” God often uses mentors, spiritual leaders, and godly friends to guide our steps.
Fourth, we must walk in obedience. Every ordered step comes as a result of obedience, not mere desire. James 1:22 reminds us, “But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.”
Sometimes it may feel like our steps are uncertain: opportunities may be confusing, choices may seem overwhelming, and failures may appear discouraging. Even then, Psalm 37 reminds us to remain steadfast. God orders the steps, even when we cannot see the entire path.
Isaiah 55:8–9 encourages us:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord.”
Trust is essential when vision is limited.
When we know our steps are ordered by God – we can walk without fear, we can pursue goals with confidence, and we can face trials with hope. Psalm 37:24 says, “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” God’s guidance brings not just direction – it brings stability, protection, and peace.
Whatever challenges lie ahead, we can trust that God is actively guiding each step for our good and His glory. Our part is to remain faithful, obedient, and trusting.
Walk in faith. Commit your ways. Seek His guidance. And let your steps become a testimony of God’s perfect order.
