FRIENDSHIP
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Proverbs 17:17 KJV
Many Christian men lament their lack of deep friendships with other men. They read of the closeness of David and Jonathan and wish for something like that in their own lives. Friendship, like so much else, is a gift of God. A man with no friends misses out on a key relationship in spiritual growth. For the love of a friend reveals the love of God, and during times of adversity, a true friend becomes God with skin. To have friends, one must show himself friendly. To enlarge one’s circle of friends begins with asking God for the gift of friends. It then requires us to move out of our comfort zones and reach out, perhaps to those we sense are in need of friends too.
The strength of a church is largely determined by the extent of the friendships within the fellowship of the church.
- Vernon McGee wrote:
“There is a brotherhood within the body of believers, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the common denominator. Friendship and fellowship are the legal tender among believers.”
