About This Camp
William Williston Heartsill (1839–1916) was a Confederate soldier, author, and merchant, best known for his detailed Civil War journal, Fourteen Hundred and 91 Days in the Confederate Army. Serving with the W.P. Lane Rangers, a Texas cavalry unit, Heartsill meticulously documented his wartime experiences and uniquely self-published his journal in 1876, using a hand-operated press and including original photographs of his comrades. After the war, he became a prominent merchant in Marshall, Texas, and remained dedicated to preserving Confederate history. The W. W. Heartsill Camp #314 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, chartered in 2003 in Marshall, honors his legacy by promoting Southern heritage and history in East Texas.
