On a solemn afternoon, July 13, 2024, members of Walker’s Greyhounds Camp #2338 gathered at historic Fort Belknap to bid farewell to a beloved compatriot, John McKee. Commander Hand and 2nd Lt. Commander Hand had the distinct honor of participating in the Memorial Service, standing alongside fellow 2nd Brigade Compatriots in a tribute to a man whose dedication to the cause and brotherhood left a lasting legacy.
The ceremony began with the Canteen Ceremony, a time-honored tradition that symbolizes the final call to arms. In this moving tribute, comrades share in a moment of reflection, reminding us all of the enduring bond we hold as descendants of those who served. Compatriot McKee’s canteen was passed among the men as a symbol of his service and devotion, ensuring his memory will never be forgotten.
Afterward, the Goods Light Artillery joined the assembled rifle squad to honor Compatriot McKee with a 3-shot volley. Commander Hand and 2nd Lt. Commander Hand proudly took their positions in the squad, delivering the traditional volley as a final salute to a man who gave so much to his fellow compatriots and to the preservation of our shared history. The sharp crack of the rifles echoed across Fort Belknap, marking the close of a life dedicated to honoring our heritage.
It was a day filled with reverence, respect, and reflection, as we said our goodbyes to John McKee. Though he has passed on, his contributions and his spirit remain forever with us, a reminder of the strength of our fraternity and the importance of remembering those who came before us. We will miss him, but we take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in each of us.
Rest in peace, Compatriot McKee. Your memory will be cherished and your service honored for generations to come.
